Horizontal motions in sunspot penumbrae

چکیده

High-resolution observations of horizontal motions in the penumbra are needed to complement concept penumbrae obtained from spectropolarimetry. Time series intensity images a large sunspot AR 10634 acquired with Swedish Solar Telescope G band and red continuum analysed. The two simultaneous time last six hours five minutes. Horizontal penumbral grains (PGs), structures dark bodies filaments, outer border, G-band bright points measured slices that cover whole width neighbouring granulation. spatial temporal resolutions 90 km 20.1 s, respectively. In inner penumbra, PGs move toward umbra (inwards) mean speed -0.7 s-1. direction motion changes inwards outwards at approximately 60% increases gradually approaching 0.5 km/s. This is also typical an expansion penumbra-granulation border during periods typically one hour followed by fast contraction. majority moves away sunspot, 0.6 High outward speeds, 3.6 km/s on average, observed filaments. Recent Evidence for Convection in Sunspot Penumbrae

Whereas penumbral models during the last 15 years have been successful in explaining Evershed flows and magnetic field inclination variations in terms of flux tubes, the lack of contact between these models and a convective process needed to explain the penumbral radiative heat flux has been disturbing. We report on recent observational and theoretical evidence that challenge flux tube interpre...

A Curious History of Sunspot Penumbrae

Daily records of sunspot group areas compiled by the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, from May of 1874 through 1976 indicate a curious history for the penumbral areas of the smaller sunspot groups. On average, the ratio of penumbral area to umbral area in a sunspot group increases from 5 to 6 as the total sunspot group area increases from 100 to 2000 μHem (a μHem is 10−6 the area of a solar hemisp...

Discovery of inward moving magnetic enhancements in sunspot penumbrae

Sunspot penumbrae show a fine structure in continuum intensity that displays considerable dynamics. The magnetic field, in contrast, although also highly structured, has appeared to be relatively static. Here we report the discovery of inward moving magnetic enhancements in the penumbrae of two regular sunspots based on time series of SOHO/MDI magnetograms. Local enhancements of the LOS compone...

Field - Free Gaps near Τ = 1 in Sunspot Penumbrae ?

The vertical stratification of the magnetic field strength in sunspot penumbrae is investigated by means of spectropolarimetric observations at high spatial resolution from the Hinode spacecraft. Assuming that the magnetic field changes linearly with optical depth we find that, in those regions where the magnetic field is more inclined and the Evershed flow is strongest (penumbral intraspines),...

Convection and the Origin of Evershed Flows in Sunspot Penumbrae

We discuss a numerical 3D radiation-MHD simulation of penumbral fine structure in a small sunspot. This simulation shows the development of short filamentary structures with horizontal flows, similar to observed Evershed flows, and an inward propagation of these structures at a speed compatible with observations. Although the lengths of these filaments are much shorter than observed, we conject...
